The Greater Seattle area and Washington state are becoming known as one of the premier biotechnology centers in the world.

Nearly one-half of the more than 230 private and publicly traded biotechnology and medical device firms in Washington are founded on technologies developed at one of the area's non-profit institutions - University of Washington, Washington State University, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), Pacific Northwest Research Institute, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

The FHCRC's E. Donnall Thomas received the 1990 Nobel Prize for his pioneering work with bone marrow transplantation.
